Best Time to Dive Batu Bolong
Scuba diving Labuan Bajo is possible year-round, but Batu Bolong is at its finest during the dry season, from May to October. During this period, the visibility often reaches 20–30 meters, and conditions tend to be calmer.
However, Batu Bolong is extremely current-sensitive. The pinnacle sits in the middle of a channel, with powerful currents sweeping around it. The key to enjoying this site safely is timing—you must dive it at slack tide, when the current slows just enough to allow a safe and controlled descent.
Your Komodo dive center or liveaboard crew will usually time the dive perfectly, using tide charts and local knowledge.
Dive Tips: Currents, Experience Level & Safety
- Currents: Stay on the sheltered side of the rock. The center of the channel can have dangerous downcurrents, so don’t drift too far from your guide.
- Experience: Batu Bolong is not ideal for first-time divers. It’s better suited for advanced diving Komodo enthusiasts or those taking dive courses in Labuan Bajo and ready for a challenge.
- Nitrox: This site benefits from longer bottom time at moderate depths. If you’re certified for Nitrox diving Komodo, it’s a great choice.
