The northern channels funnel cool, nutrient-rich water through narrow passes. That current is what pulls in the schools of barracuda, jacks, and tuna, and brings the white-tip sharks out of the blue. The visibility is the best in the park.

These sites are advanced. We dive them when conditions agree — and they’re worth the wait.

Skill level

  • Minimum: Advanced Open Water + 30 logged dives, recent activity
  • Best for: experienced divers comfortable in current
  • Equipment recommended: reef hook, dive computer, surface marker buoy

The sites

Golden Passage

A wide channel passage producing long, beautiful drift dives through healthy coral gardens. Current is generally predictable and follows the channel direction cleanly — less chaotic than south sites. Schooling fish, Napoleon wrasse, and excellent coral. Often glassy conditions during north season.

Marine life :

  • Drift through coral gardens
  • Napoleon wrasse
  • Schooling snappers
  • Trevally
  • Barracuda
  • Soft coral

Tips:

Best Apr–Oct. Time the drift carefully — strong flood or ebb. One-way drift; coordinate boat pickup in advance. Best visibility May–Sep.

Crystal Rock

Twin pinnacles in the northern channel. Fierce current, extraordinary marine life — one of the top dive sites in Indonesia. Bumphead parrotfish, schooling hammerheads (Jul–Sep), manta rays, and walls of fish.

Marine life :

  • Schooling hammerhead sharks
  • Bumphead parrotfish
  • Manta rays
  • Dogtooth tuna
  • Giant trevally

Tips:

Advanced divers only. Dive on slack — window can be very short. Hammerhead sightings peak Jul–Sep early morning on the deep side 20–30 m.

Castle Rock

Adjacent to Crystal Rock, arguably the better of the two for sheer fish biomass. Dense schools of chevron barracuda, big-eye trevally, and snappers. Sharks are regular visitors on the east face.

Marine life :

  • Chevron barracuda schools
  • Big-eye trevally
  • Grey reef sharks
  • White-tip reef sharks
  • Napoleon wrasse

Tips:

Plan with Crystal Rock in the same trip. East face most productive for pelagics. Keep reef hook accessible. Castle tends to hold current slightly longer.

Shotgun

Named for the speed you travel through the channel. A pure drift dive — you go where the current takes you. Channel walls covered in hard and soft corals. Exhilarating when conditions are right.

Marine life :

  • High-speed drift
  • Reef sharks
  • Eagle rays
  • Dense reef fish
  • Occasional manta
  • Coral-covered walls

Tips:

Not for slow divers or anyone who panics in current. Entry point is everything. Coordinate closely with your boat — exit can be fast and unpredictable.

China Shop

Named for the delicate, branching coral structures everywhere. Some of the best staghorn and table coral formations in the park. Very slow, careful diving required. Suitable for all levels when current is light.

Marine life :

  • Staghorn coral fields
  • Table corals
  • Anthias clouds
  • Butterflyfish
  • Parrotfish
  • Nudibranchs

Tips:

Buoyancy control critical — damage here is irreversible. Avoid when surge is present. Best in morning light.

Lighthouse (Mercusuar)

Wall dive below the lighthouse. Dramatic wall with sea fans and black coral at depth. Strong surge on the top section. Good pelagic action — tuna, jacks, and occasional hammerheads on the deep wall.

Marine life :

  • Sea fan wall
  • Black coral
  • Dogtooth tuna
  • Hammerheads (occasional, deep)
  • Gorgonians

Tips:

Descend to 15 m+ quickly to get clear of surface surge. Best on incoming tide. Keep an eye into the blue on the deep wall.

When to dive the north

Year-round, but the best window is April to October when seas are calmer and tides cooperate. Currents are tide-driven — your dive guide picks the day and the slot.
