Labuan Bajo, the gateway to Komodo National Park, is a fishing town located on the western tip of Flores Island in Indonesia. As a popular destination for travelers seeking adventure, wildlife, and stunning landscapes, it’s necessary to prepare properly for your trip.

The Weather & Water Temperature

Labuan Bajo and Komodo National Park offer a tropical climate that is warm year-round, with distinct wet and dry seasons. You either can choose to visit during the dry season for optimal conditions or the wet season for a quieter experience.

April – June

The dry season begins in April, with decreasing humidity and clearer skies. Temperatures are warm, averaging around 28°C to 32°C (82°F to 90°F).
Ideal for diving, snorkeling, and outdoor activities, as visibility underwater is excellent, often reaching 20-30 meters.

Water temperature: 26°C to 28°C

July – September

These months are considered the peak of the dry season. Expect sunny days and mild evenings. Temperatures remain consistent, averaging 27°C to 31°C (81°F to 88°F).

This is the busiest season for the area with optimal diving conditions.

October – December

As the dry season starts to wind down, temperatures remain warm, but occasional rain showers may begin in November. Average temperatures hover around 26°C to 30°C (79°F to 86°F).
It is still good for diving and exploring, but be prepared for the possibility of brief rain.

January

January is typically the wettest month. Expect increased rainfall and cloudy skies, but temperatures remain warm, averaging 25°C to 30°C (77°F to 86°F).

February

Similar to January, with frequent rain showers, though the rains may start to ease towards the end of the month. Temperatures continue to be warm.

March

Rainfall begins to taper off, signaling the transition to the dry season. Temperature averages remain around 26°C to 31°C (79°F to 88°F).

Getting to Labuan Bajo

By Plane

The most convenient way to reach Labuan Bajo (LBJ) is by air. The town has an airport, Komodo Airport, which connects it to major cities in Indonesia, including:

  • Bali (Denpasar) : Several airlines operate daily flights between Ngurah Rai International Airport and Komodo Airport. This is the most common route for international travelers.
  • Jakarta: Daily direct flights from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (CGK) to Labuan Bajo are available.
  • Surabaya: Direct flights are available from Juanda International Airport (SUB) to Labuan Bajo, typically with a short duration.

Tip: Book your flights in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons (June to September), for availability and better prices.

By Boat

For those seeking a more adventurous route, traveling by boat is an option: 

  • From Bali: There are ferry services and liveaboard cruises that operate between Bali/ Lombok/ The 3 Gili islands and Labuan Bajo. This journey takes a few days, offering chances to explore the beautiful islands along the way.
  • From Sumbawa: Local ferries connect Sumbawa to Labuan Bajo, providing another route, though schedules may vary.

Note: Ferry travel can be less predictable, so it’s advisable to check schedules and book in advance when possible.

Paperwork and Travel Requirements

Before your trip, make sure you have the necessary paperwork:

  • Passport: Your passport must have 2 blank pages and be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date in Indonesia.
  • Visa: Many nationalities can enter Indonesia visa-free for short stays, while others may require a visa on arrival or a tourist visa. Check the latest visa regulations before your trip.
  • Travel Insurance: It’s recommended to have travel insurance that covers health, accidents, and unexpected cancellations.
  • Health Documents: All passengers and aircraft personnel traveling from abroad are now required to fill in a Health Pass prior to entry into Indonesia.  Please complete the form before boarding your flight to Bali.

  • Sun hat and sunglasses
  • Light jacket or sweater: Evenings can be cooler, especially if you’re on a boat.
  • Comfy footwear: Bring sandals for the beach and shoes for hiking and exploring.

Essentials

  • Sunscreen:  SPF 50+ sunscreen is crucial in this tropical climate.
  • Insect repellent: Mosquitoes can be prevalent, so keep repellent handy, especially for hikes and evenings.
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Snorkeling gear: If you have your own equipment, consider bringing it, although rentals are available.

Getting Around Labuan Bajo

Airport Transfer

Taxis and shuttle services are available from Komodo Airport to the town center. The cost is approximately 100.000rp/ car.

Local Transport

Within Labuan Bajo, you can use taxis, motorbike (ojek/ Gojek), or rent a scooter to explore at your own pace.

Boat Tours

Many visitors book local day trips and sunset cruises to visit nearby islands.
