There’s a moment that happens to almost every diver planning a trip to Komodo.
You’ve finally decided to go. Flights are checked. Dive dates are open. Then comes the question:
How many days should you spend on a Komodo liveaboard?
Three? Five? Seven?
The truth is, there’s no universal answer. The best itinerary depends on your available time, your diving experience, your budget, and how deeply you want to explore the park.
At Maria Seascape, we usually tell guests this:
The longer you stay, the more Komodo reveals itself.
Not just more dive sites but different moods of the ocean, changing currents, shifting marine life, and the quiet rhythm that only liveaboard diving gives you.
Here’s a realistic breakdown of what each trip actually feels like.
The 3-Day Trip — A Taste
A 3-day, 2-night liveaboard is the shortest route we recommend for divers who want more than a crowded day trip from Labuan Bajo.
This itinerary usually focuses on the central Komodo National Park, where conditions are accessible year-round and many of the park’s legendary dive sites are located.
Typical dive sites include:
- Batu Bolong
- Manta Point
- Siaba
- Tatawa Besar
You’ll usually complete around 9 dives across 3 days, including the chance for a sunset or night dive depending on conditions.
This trip works well if:
- You have limited time in Indonesia
- You’re adding diving onto a Bali holiday
- You want a final adventure before flying home
- You prefer a shorter liveaboard experience
The biggest limitation is range.
A 3-day route normally won’t reach the far north or deep south of Komodo, where some of the park’s most dramatic conditions and biodiversity exist. But it still offers a powerful introduction to Komodo’s famous currents, reef life, and pelagic action.
For many divers, it’s the trip that convinces them to come back longer next time.
The 5-Day Trip — The Classic
If you only do one Komodo liveaboard in your life, this is the itinerary we recommend most often.
A 5-day trip gives the captain and dive guides enough flexibility to explore beyond the central park and chase the best conditions of the week.
Depending on weather and tides, the route may head north or south.
North Komodo Highlights
Northern Komodo is known for stronger currents, explosive fish life, and thrilling reef structures.
Possible sites include:
- Castle Rock
- Crystal Rock
- The Shotgun
- Batu Bolong
- Manta Point
Expect schools of trevally, reef sharks, giant tuna, swirling fusiliers, and some of the strongest currents in the park.
South Komodo Highlights
Southern Komodo feels completely different.
The water is colder, visibility can shift quickly, and the reefs explode with soft corals and macro life.
Possible sites include:
- Manta Alley
- Three Sisters
South Komodo is often where photographers fall in love with the park. The reefs feel untouched, dramatic, and alive with color.
Why Divers Love the 5-Day Trip
The real luxury of a 5-day liveaboard isn’t only the number of dives.
It’s the pace.
You wake up before sunrise for a calm morning dive. Coffee appears on deck while the islands slowly light up around you. Between dives, there’s no rush back to harbor, no speedboat crowds, and no traffic waiting at the end of the day.
You simply drift deeper into the rhythm of the sea.
For first-time visitors, the 5-day itinerary offers the best balance between:
- Dive coverage
- Comfort
- Cost
- Flexibility
- Variety of dive site
The 7-Day Trip — North to South
A 7-day Komodo liveaboard is where the trip starts feeling less like a holiday and more like a true diving expedition.
With a full week onboard, we can often combine:
- Northern Komodo
- Central Komodo
- Southern Komodo
— all within one route.
Instead of choosing between north or south, you experience the entire character of the park in a single journey.
And the difference is enormous.
One day you’re diving adrenaline-filled current channels surrounded by pelagic fish. Two days later, you’re drifting through cold southern reefs covered in soft coral gardens and hunting for rare macro life.
The variety becomes the highlight.
Who Should Choose a 7-Day Liveaboard?
This itinerary is ideal for:
- Experienced divers
- Underwater photographers
- Divers returning to Komodo
- Travelers flying long distances
- Guests who want maximum dive variety
Longer trips also provide something underrated:
More flexibility for conditions.
If weather changes or currents become too aggressive in one region, a 7-day itinerary gives guides more options to adapt safely while still delivering exceptional diving.
It’s simply the most complete way to experience Komodo National Park.

How to Choose
Choosing the right Komodo liveaboard depends on how much time you have and how much of the park you want to explore.
A 3-day trip is ideal if you’re short on time or adding diving into a longer Indonesia holiday. You’ll still experience Komodo’s famous reefs and currents, but mainly within the central park.
For most divers, the 5-day itinerary is the best balance. It gives enough time to reach more remote dive sites, enjoy sunrise or night dives, and experience Komodo without feeling rushed. If it’s your first time here, this is usually the trip we recommend most.
A 7-day liveaboard is for divers who want the full experience. You’ll have the chance to explore both north and south Komodo, with more variety in marine life, reef conditions, and dive environments throughout the trip.
If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help at Maria Seascape. We usually ask about your dive experience, travel dates, comfort in current, and what you want to see underwater before recommending the best route.
A Quick Note About Komodo Conditions
Komodo routes are never completely fixed.
Tides, weather, and currents change constantly, so experienced liveaboard crews adjust routes based on real-time conditions. That’s why we don’t promise exact dive sites in advance.
On 5-day and 7-day trips, we usually choose the north or south route depending on which area offers the best diving that week.
Because in Komodo, timing matters more than ticking famous sites off a list.
See available departures and prices on the Maria Seascape booking page, or message us with your dates and we’ll suggest the best route.
