Day boat and liveaboard in Komodo waters

Daily Dive Trip vs Liveaboard in Komodo: Which One Is Better?

Every week, we get the same question on WhatsApp:

“Should I book daily dive trips from Labuan Bajo, or do a liveaboard in Komodo?”

The truth is, there’s no single right answer.

At Amare Divers, we run both daily diving trips and liveaboards, so this guide is based on what we genuinely see work best for different travellers.

Some divers want flexibility and shorter dive days. Others come to Komodo specifically to maximise their underwater experience. Both options can be incredible; it just depends on your time, budget, and diving goals.

When a Daily Dive Trip Makes More Sense

Daily diving from Labuan Bajo is ideal if you prefer flexibility and shorter commitments.

A day trip is usually the better option when:

  • You only have 2–3 days in Labuan Bajo
  • You want to combine diving with land activities like visiting the Komodo dragons
  • You’re newly certified and prefer shorter, more relaxed dive days
  • You’re travelling with non-divers
  • You want to stay in a hotel instead of sleeping on a boat
  • You’re working with a tighter travel budget

For many first-time visitors to Komodo, daily diving is the easiest and most comfortable way to experience the park.

You can dive during the day, return to town in the evening, enjoy dinner by the beach, and decide your schedule one day at a time.

When a Komodo Liveaboard Is Worth It

A liveaboard becomes the better experience when diving is the main reason you came to Komodo.

A liveaboard is usually the right choice if:

  • You have 4 or more days available for diving
  • You want to explore the north or south of Komodo National Park
  • You want sunrise dives, night dives, or up to 4 dives a day
  • You want access to more remote dive sites
  • You don’t want to commute back to the harbour every evening

Liveaboards allow you to reach dive sites that are difficult — or sometimes impossible — to visit on a standard day trip schedule

Daily Diving vs Liveaboard: Cost Comparison

At first glance, daily diving looks significantly cheaper.

But once you calculate accommodation, meals, and logistics, the price difference is often smaller than people expect.

Daily Dive Trip Costs (3 Days)

For 3 days of fun diving from Labuan Bajo, you can expect roughly:

  • USD 400–600 in dive trip costs
  • Hotel accommodation
  • Komodo National Park fees
  • Meals and drinks in town

Liveaboard Costs (3 Days)

For a 3-day Maria Seascape liveaboard trip, you can expect roughly:

  • USD 1,000–1,400 including:
    • Cabin accommodation
    • All meals
    • Dive guide
    • Multiple daily dives
  • Park fees are usually separate

The liveaboard price is higher upfront, but it also includes nearly everything during the trip — and usually gives you more dives and access to more advanced dive sites

Our Honest Recommendation

If you have less than 4 diving days, daily dive trips are usually the smarter option. You’ll still experience world-class Komodo diving without locking yourself into a longer itinerary.

If you have 4 days or more, and diving is your main focus, a liveaboard is absolutely worth considering. The experience is very different — more immersive, more remote, and often better value per dive.

And if you have a full week in Komodo?

Do both.

Start with a few relaxed daily dive trips from Labuan Bajo, then finish with a 3–4 day liveaboard adventure.

That combination gives you the best of both worlds.
